My Life Saving Volunteer Experience by Alexis - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

One volunteer experience that I’ve had was volunteering at the event through my church titled Feed My Starving Children. This program combines teamwork, motivation, dedication, and fun in order to be able to provide food for children who are deprived of the food we all enjoy every day. This experience completely changed the way I view my life and the lives of those around me. It taught me that there are millions of people around the world much less fortunate than I am, unable to have access to the food that I take for granted, and it brought me together with people around my community in order to fight for a common cause.
I was honored to be able to volunteer in this event because all together, we packed more than 10,000 meals and were part of the Green Bay effort which packed over 550,000 meals in just 4 days. Reaching out to more than 70 countries, Feed My Starving Children ensured that my actions, along with the actions of many, many others, would feed thousands of children across the world. Just a few hours packing meals knowing that a child will benefit from my actions is something that is hard to process. You can’t even imagine what it means for someone living in a third world country to be able to rely on the food you’ve packed for their daily survival. I take pride in knowing that my volunteer experience with Feed My Starving children will make a difference in the lives of many.
The goal of those running this non-profit organization is to end the life threatening cycle of poverty affecting so many in our world today. This goal and the organizational efforts of those participating in the event were expressed to me when I primarily volunteered and immediately I was certain that this was a cause I would be thrilled to be a part of. It struck me that helping others around the world is an experience I couldn’t pass up on; an offer I couldn’t refuse.
Hand packing rice meals with people from my school, my church, and those I had never met before was an experience I will surely never forget. All of these people joining together gives you a sense of hope and pure excitement for the future. I encouraged others to join the movement and volunteer at next year’s event so that hopefully, we can get more people to participate in Feed My Starving Children. Only a couple hours of service will ensure that children and their families will be able to survive for years to come.
