English and I by Alexis - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

As a science girl, my heart tells me to reach for something along the lines of Anatomy or Chemistry. The workings of the world and our bodies have always fascinated me. Why certain chemicals when combined turn a different color or combust. What the difference between veins and arteries are and why eating certain foods don't sit well inside you. Did you know that there's a U-shaped bone in the neck that isn't connected to any other bone and supports your tongue? It basically floats and is called the Hyoid bone!
Even though I could spend hours upon hours spouting off all the neat and interesting facts I have stored within my head, there is something my heart explodes with joy for. That subject is English. Every English teacher I've ever had opened my eyes to the world. I was naïve and closed-minded, believing that there was only one way to summarize and understand the story or article. Many kids don't like the subject and I have always wonder myself: "Who would go to college to be a high school English teacher?!"
Furthermore, who would want to deal with disobedient and aloof kids? This is where the benefits of the job come in. English teaches students new vocabulary and diction. It makes people sound more educated and shows you understand what you just read or said. How hard is it gonna be to write a college essay when your professor uses higher level words to describe the prompt and you don't grasp a lick of it? It'll be a rocky world for you indeed with basic vocabulary running amuck within your cranium.
Not to mention, English gives you insight to the past. In a different way that History does. Reading excerpt and poems from famous writers, Native Americans, U.S. generals, former slaves, and so much more. You gain an appreciation for the style of writing and person in that period of time. These are good qualities to pass down to the future of our country. It makes for a well rounded, knowledgeable person and I would love to be a helping hand in the process of educating of children.
