Why Study Abroad? by Alexis - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
As a current college student with an undecided major I feel that it would be beneficial for all students to study abroad. Many students feel that it won’t help their career, but regardless of what your major is many employers value study abroad. The simple fact that you’ve studied abroad will show potential employers that you are adaptable and open to change and new experiences. Not to mention it opens you up to a wider variety of culture among our world. This time abroad also allows for you to connect with others and find yourself.
Many students are in a hurry to graduate with as little debt as possible. Although studying abroad can potentially add six months to a year onto your college career it’s surprisingly affordable. The majority of students who are receiving financial aid assume that they have to give it up. But, the truth is in most cases your aid will go with you. Study abroad programs and providers typically offer their own scholarships and discounts on things like early registration. So, don’t assume that studying abroad is out of your price range start looking at the cost and opportunities and go from there.
These are just two of the biggest reasons I think people choose not to study abroad, but by addressing them with facts I hope to encourage students to study abroad. If given the chance to do so I personally wouldn’t pass up the opportunity in hopes that it would better my future career and job offers. By receiving additional scholarships funds, this will help my chances of studying abroad and minimize my debt by graduation.
