My Gap Year Plan by Alexia - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I had a gap year, I would take the time to work to repay my debt to my parents. I would work as much as I could so that I could afford my college when my gap year was over and so that I could repay any debts I have. I moved states the day after I graduated high school and so I had to spend my summer before college looking for a job. Also, because I had moved states, I couldn't spend my free time with friends. A gap year could help me make up for lost time and money.
I moved the day after I graduated high school because my father is in the United States Air Force. As soon as we got to Colorado, I started looking for jobs. I used my school's job posting website to help me find jobs and I ended up getting a job as a man's personal assistant. This man ended up scamming me out of $2000. My parents had to pay the money back to the bank and I now owe my parents that money. I also still have to pay for college. A gap year would allow me to be able to work as much as I could and pay my parents back. My parents claim that, while I'm in school, they don't want me working too much so it will currently take me a very long time to be able to pay them back.
Also, because I moved states very recently, I have out-of-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition is very expensive and my student loans don't cover even half of it. A gap year would allow me to become an in-state resident and it would help save up extra money, that doesn't go to my parents or bills, to help pay for my college fees that student loans don't cover.
If I took a gap year, I wouldn't do the fun and exciting things that I would want to do. I would take the year to become more financially stable and be financially smart about my future. A fun trip to another country with my friends may sound appealing now but I would regret using a gap year like that in the future. I want to be financially smart now so that I can have fun in my future without worry.
