The Importance of Teaching Second Graders the Value of Life Long Learning by Alexi - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

Being a continuous learner is a relatively new concept that most of us were not taught but should have learned at a young age. Generally speaking it is true that a formal education and the resulting qualifications are important. Education may maximize our potential to find better, more satisfying jobs, earn more and, perhaps, become more successful in our chosen career. My mother has been a second grade teacher for most of her twenty-four years in teaching, and I have heard many stories about her teaching and learning. Second graders are at an age where they like to have fun, learn, and be with their friends. To teach second graders about continuous learning you need to encourage them to build on their excitement to learn and teach them how it opens doors to a world of unlimited knowledge.
Through my mom’s stories and also my own personal examples with children around that age, I have learned that children respond more positively when they are having fun. While explaining about the importance of continuous learning to second graders, I think it’s important to choose some of the topics they are interested in. For example, if a child is interested in space or astronauts, then it is important to explain to them how continuing their education would help them in achieving that goal. The point is that teachers and parents need to engage kids by using their interests and imaginations.
I’ve also learned that second graders are at that stage when they are naturally curious about everything. My mother will vouch for the fact that they are constantly asking questions about everything. When explaining to second graders about the importance of learning, you should explain to them that, when a person continues their education, they could possibly become masters of whatever they want to learn about. This in turn, explains how it opens the door to an unlimited amount of knowledge.
Overall, it is very important to teach young second graders the importance of continuous learning. When you get children to be engaged and excited about future learning, that opens the door for them to have potentially unlimited knowledge. It is so important to teach children these lessons - including second graders - because lifelong learning can enhance our understanding of the world around us, provide us with more and better opportunities and improve our quality of life. Second graders are the future - it is necessary that adults begin the discussions of lifelong learning at that early age.
