My Senior Year Government Class by Alexandria - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

My four years of High School were some of the best days of my life. Although, as my time came to move on and continue my education at a higher level… there was one thing I began to realize. I had no idea what it was I wanted to do with my life. Leaving high school, I felt as if I was completely unprepared for college. I had no idea what I wanted to study nor did I have any idea what type of careers were ever out there in the “real world” other than the basic doctor, teacher, nurse etc. After I committed to the University of Cincinnati came my High School graduation, followed by numerous grad parties and lots of congratulations checks. Now don’t get me wrong that part was awesome, but I was still left feeling anxious and lost about the upcoming chapter of my life.

Believe it or not this lengthy intro actually has a point… Looking back on High School it was difficult for me to find many things that I learned about in class that I could take with me into the real world. The one class that truly stuck out to me was my senior year Government class with Mr. Back. Boy oh boy did this man always have a smile on his face! Mr. Back was about 5’10, bald, and full of every fact one needed to know about all 43 presidents sworn into office. History/ government had always been my weakest subject throughout High School. Every year I would find my self either struggling to keep my eyes open or cramming in some last minute studying for another course. There was something about Mr. Back’s government class that made me so interested. Never before would I think I would end up with an A in a history class. When Mr. Back began to teach us about politics and how the government operated it was like a bell went off in my head. Each day he began to teach us more and more about how our Government works in comparison to other countries and it was that moment in time when I thought to myself, wow this is extremely important stuff. Not only did Mr. Back help me to become a registered voter at the age of 18, but he helped me to understand which political party I represent.

Coming out of Mr. Back’s class I was very surprised at how much I took away from it and how it would be very useful to me in the future. His class opened up my eyes as to what is going on in our world today and how our government operates. It pushed me out of my comfort zone to make decisions and establish my political stance. In those ways it helped me take the biggest step towards adulthood that I solely believe I made my entire four years of High School. When Mr. Back taught us how voting worked in American and we learned about the electoral college he made sure we realized how important it is to get out and vote. Knowing that my opinion actually mattered and was worth something made me feel more apart of our nation than ever before! I am very thankful for my senior year Government class as it was able to open me up to so much more that I never knew about our country and how it operates
