Perception of College Importance by Alexandra - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

The perception of education differs between the eyes of the beholder, it can be relative and doesn’t define the entirety of one’s lives. As a society, we are not limited nor obligated to follow the ideals of others. We are entitled to pursue career paths as we desire despite the lack of education that some feel entitled to decline in their life. To say that college is important can be interpreted from different spectrums but can only be given an exact answer from the individual. As we seek the answers to the question, they may appear distinct across many origins and diverse beings that we may come across.

The encouraging words to pursue college have sounded like a broken record across my life, however, I feel empowered to say that college is important in my life but that doesn’t mean it's important for all. As a united society, we must consider the choices of all before our own. I can give a list of reasons why college is significant in my life such as being the daughter of immigrant parents, being a female minority, and the desperate need for exploring career paths. However, I would be excluding those who don’t feel the drastic need for us to be buried in books to achieve the meaning of success. College allows us to create our persona and create connections that will help us shape our future paths on the step to independence. Yet it can be conditional because others choose to seek the experience of being independent in other ways that don’t require college. Such as military, social media influencers, and personal businesses that allow them to create their adventures without feeling limited by rigid schedules that schools place. Attending college is an option that many choose to not follow but that doesn't reduce its importance nor increases it.

The term importance can be interpreted differently, therefore, my final thoughts would be about the significance of following our paths regardless of the opinions that others may deem relevant. Although college is important to me I would never encourage someone to attend college if it wasn't their passion even if I did believe that it could grant them more opportunities. The opportunities that we receive in life may be furthered by college yet possible without it as well. In essence, as I further my education I take into account the successes around the world that have occurred without the assistance of a higher institution and accept my path.
