Real Life Preparedness by Alexandra - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

College isn’t just a place to learn information to spit out to get a future job, it is a place where a person can truly become ready to enter the world and succeed. A person doesn’t just learn specific facts in the subject of their major, they learn real-life skills that are very essential. College is a time where your time is very flexible which means you aren’t just learning the subjects, but also time management skills. When a student has a class of over a hundred students, they are faced with the fact that teachers won’t look after the students the same way as in high school. This teaches a person to become much more resourceful, as the only way to succeed is by really putting in the effort to look for additional resources and study groups to fully understand a subject. When going to college, a person is met with so many new people no matter if they are going to a school in or out of state. It allows a person to become more open-minded as there are so many new ideas and perspectives floating around them, allowing them to become more educated on things that they were once close-minded about. College is an amazing time to become who you really are. In high school, we have little variety from student to student in class subjects, but in college, it is a time to focus on the subjects a person is truly passionate about. You can learn what you truly love and spend your time learning more about it. Also, with the flexibility of your schedule and the limitless options provided by schools, college is a great time to learn what you're passionate about outside of the classroom. They have a variety of clubs a student can join to test the waters for great extracurriculars that they would want to pursue, such as theatre, dance, a sport, and so much more.

I believe college is important to me because I get to learn more about the subjects I am very passionate about, but also become ready to enter the real world outside of the support nets of school and my family. Only in Junior year, I decided to go into biological sciences, but ever since then I spend a majority of my free time listening to recent research done in the field over podcasts and other scientific podcasts to continue to learn more than what we learn in class. With majoring in biology, I can fill my schedule with biological classes to spend a large amount of my time with subjects that I truly love, rather than the classes I don’t care as much about. I can even find what specific parts of biology I want to focus on because the classes are much more in-depth than the high school biology classes in which they taught everything very generally. This will help me choose a path for my future career after college. With studying biological sciences, I can’t really go into the field without a degree because there is so much knowledge needed to be prepared for the scientific field. So by going to college, it will help me receive a job and do it to my best ability as I am prepared for it.

Overall, college is so important to help a student to become much more independent and prepared to enter the real world. Are students always 100% prepared? Not at all. But it provides the students to be as prepared much more than they were after high school.
