As the Classroom Rocks by Alexandra - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
The room rocks slowly back and forth, as the professors pass out our exams. The sound of water splashing against the sides of the ship is relaxing and I’m confident about the test on Japan’s economy lying in front of me. Sailing away from Asia I fill in the first bubble.
My ideal classroom environment, would be a classroom without a stable environment. An environment that is constantly changing, as we are constantly moving from country to country, exploring different cultures and ways of life. As a marketing major, and international business minor, I find it important to learn about the world around us, and explore it in as much depth as possible. Having a global education is more important now than ever. The world continues to become smaller as technologies continue to advance, making communication and travel easier. Being in a class that took exams and held lectures on a ship, then disembarked to be fully immersed in the culture and ways of business we had just learned about would be incredible.
This classroom environment would be ideal because it would allow me to learn the most, and would also be attractive to future employers. By holding lectures about a country’s economy, business strategies, and communication strategies before visiting the country, students would be able to compare what they learned in the classroom to real events they would be engaged in upon getting off the ship. The class would then be held by a tour guide, along with our professors, who would bring us behind the scenes of big businesses around the globe. This type of education would also be beneficial to a student’s job search down the road, because employers are now looking for worldly applicants as business is being taken overseas.
And as I filled in the last bubble on my test, I smiled because this experience had been life changing and I knew I had received the best education possible for me. Now to go have fun at our ship’s personal water-park!
