Oh the Places You'll go, Little One by Alexandra - March 2018 Scholarship Essay
Describing college to a second grader might be a difficult task to conquer, but I think I can explain it to them saying something like this:
Alright now college is quite complicated, but let me just explain it to you as simply as I can. College is an opportunity to learn. It’s like the school you’re in now, but you learn even more than just math and how to write in cursive. Like any school, you go to college to learn. The cool thing about college is that you can literally learn whatever you want to to learn. You want to become a doctor? You can learn about the human body and how science controls your body. You want to learn more about the presidents? There’s a class about that too. Overall, college is a place where you learn about everything, not just academically but also physically.
Let me be a little more specific. You can learn about literally anything you want. When you first start going to college, you take certain classes which you get to choose (how cool is that?!). These classes are what we call core classes. Now some core classes you might not like, like college algebra or art history. However, they’re required as core classes and they are great classes when deciding what you want to major in. Now majoring in something means studying this topic. You can major in all sorts of things. There’s different science classes like biology (the study of life) chemistry (the study of chemicals) and astronomy (the study of stars) in which you can major in. If you like history, you can major in that too! The possibilities are endless on whatever you want to major in. It’s truly amazing, because once you find what you’re passionate in you can study it.
In college, you also learn about yourself. You don’t necessarily take a class for that, but because you’re studying something you want to do for the rest of your life, you have to learn what you like and dislike. You learn to talk with your professors and connect with them. Also, since a lot of college students, including maybe you, live away from their homes and are on their own now, they have to learn how to do that. You have to learn to do your own laundry, get to class without your parents reminding you, and really overall becoming an adult. It’s hard, but you will find it very helpful.
So little one, college is all about learning. You learn about a lot of cool stuff. You learn to live on your own, or live more independently. College is definitely like school, but with a lot more freedom and a lot more learning opportunities. I hope this can accurately explain to you what college is. College is a hard, but beautiful experience. Oh the places it will take you, little one.
