Double Duty by Alexandra - February 2013 Scholarship Essay
Not only do I love young children, I love children who have disabilities. Because of my love for these children, I have chosen to double major in Elementary Education and Special Education. All children need to learn and some just learn differently. Those with disabilities are totally able to learn, they just have a harder time, need more help or require a unique style of learning. I plan on completing this degree with the ability to help those children. When I was in high school, I went to my neighbor's house once or twice a week, just to play with her four children and give her a break. Two of her four children have special needs, her son, Isaac, being Autistic and her daughter, Ellie, being developmentally challenged. I loved these little kids and watching them grow and learn to talk and do anything a normal child could do inspired me. Someone has to be there for these kids. How else are they going to learn? After working in an elementary school after school program in the first grade, that solidified my resolve to teach younger children. I love children, especially the ones who might need some extra help because in the end, they are all kids and are all capable of learning and I plan on helping them with that.
