AVID
One organization I am apart of is AVID. I joined AVID for the first time my junior year, so I haven’t been apart of the organization for much time. However, In the short amount of time that I have been apart of AVID, I have gained new skills and tips on how I can better myself academically and as an individual. AVID can help many students achieve their dream of going to college, all that is required is the determination and consistency of the individual. They also provide SAT prep for those who are looking to improve their scores.
Another reason that AVID has impacted me is the overall attitude of the students in the class. Whether it is ding TRF’s, Field Trips, or even if it is just a normal day, being surrounded by individuals who have similar goals as you can help motivate you to reach your own. Being apart of AVID my senior year has helped me tremendously. The teachers and counselors do a great job of keeping us updated on due dates, college applications, and even scholarships for those who need help financially.
I am going to be honest, after my junior year of AVID, which was also my first year, I had wanted to leave the organization. My stubborn self did not like the work load of the class especially since I had other important classes. However, I did not keep in mind the great amount of help that would be given to me if I were to stay. I am glad I reconsidered and decided to stay because If I had not, I do not believe I would have made this much progress on the college deadlines. AVID stays on track of our grades and makes sure that no student is falling behind in any of their classes, which is good because it goes to show how they prioritize the success of each individual. We are usually given time to catch up on any assignments that we may have missed, this helps a lot when we carry a heavy workload from other classes, especially since a lot of students participate in more rigorous courses such as HP, AP, or even IB, which is not offered at many schools.
Joining AVID has definitely benefited me in many ways. I have become more focused and take my grades more seriously. Although my grades are not perfect, I am committed to applying these skills that I have obtained in the program in order to improve myself so that I am well prepared for my freshmen year of college.
