Religious Tolerance 101 by Alexander - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I was a college professor, I would head a class that lectures on the importance of religious acceptance. The class would teach that it is each individual’s right to believe and practice whatever they choose, highlighting that this liberty is protected by the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and reiterated in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations. As the professor of this class, I would emphasize the importance of not just tolerating others differences in spiritual belief, but learning to accept and even celebrate them. I would also discuss the value of coexisting and the societal benefit that would derive from such. I would teach a class of this nature because the topic of religious acceptance is one I personally feel strongly about, and because religious intolerance is a serious, worldwide, contemporary concern.
As the professor of this religious acceptance class, I would feel like I am making a difference in the world; taking strides towards a better tomorrow without religious discrimination. I would use this sense of purpose to powerfully convey to my pupils the importance of religious tolerance. Teaching this class would make me proud of my profession, and it would cause me to feel personally invested in the success and learning environment of my students. Religious intolerance is something I have suffered from, so working to remove it from the world is something about which I am passionate; this is why I would teach such a class.
