Discovering Passion by Alexa - February 2025 Scholarship Essay
In middle school, there were many projects that I had to complete. Many bored me, especially when it came to social studies. Yet, there had been a primary assignment that had grown my fundamental interest in cells and biology.
Throughout sixth grade, I dreaded walking into that science classroom, the one which was mostly white with microscopes spread around in a linear form. It had seemed too clean with no room for error. My thoughts changed as my teacher introduced a specific unit, one that followed cells and the biology of organisms. I had become enchanted by the systems of living cells and how they routinely kept bodily structures together. My fascination skyrocketed when my teacher informed us near the end of the year that we had a project to complete for our final grade. We needed to create a life-sized creation of a plant cell or a cell of a living organism, with a well-structured paragraph of its structures and functions. I remember moving swiftly, I immediately knew that I wanted to create an organic cell, I put so much effort into breaking it down perfectly with passion and successfully got an A.
Further on I took biology in ninth grade, though it may not seem like much, I learned more about the biological systems around our Earth and once again, had a final on how we would conserve the oceanic ecosystems. From my prior learning and love for science built over the years, my energy pushed into researching animals, and their ecosystems, and inventing a way to protect them. Once again, I passed with an A on the project. I was completely engaged in what I was learning, I went out of my way to research concepts outside of school so that I could refine my learning, from watching documentaries to reading articles about biological systems. I had been enthralled completely.
Perhaps the most insufficient subjects can become something that interests you completely, where you allow yourself to learn and grow a love for something you may not have realized would become your greatest dream.
