You Will Succeed Just By Trying by Alexa - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

The most important lesson I have learned from a teacher was him telling me; “You will succeed just by trying and always believe in yourself.” There are many reasons why these statements have made an impact on my life even when I was too young to realize it.

As I reflect back when I was a baby, my mother noticed that something was wrong with my head. It didn’t have the strength or movement that it should have, my head tilted to one side. It was determined that I had developmental delays. I was in physical and occupational therapy for five years. I also was in speech therapy for four years. Through the obstacles that I had from this had made me a stronger person.

I started taking dance lessons at the age of five, and my family always cheered me on at my recitals that I had every year. When I was older, one of my dance instructors asked me if I could help out teaching the younger children. I was filled with joy and pride that I was able to volunteer in helping to shape younger children to reach their potential in something I was very passionate about.

I also started playing soccer when I was five, playing for the city and I played on the Girls’ Soccer Team from middle school through high school. I enjoyed the competition, leadership and team work that was shared.

Education has been very important to me. At a young age my mother ingrained in me all the opportunities that are out there if you apply yourself. No matter if it is school work, dancing, playing soccer, volunteering, or working if I became overwhelmed, I would stop and think believe in yourself and you will succeed just by trying. I eventually got my motivation back and continued on in what I was doing at the time.

In my senior year I was chosen with eleven other students to be involved in a leadership program that was held in my city. I have done many things in this program. The most gratifying for me was being able to help elderly people use technology. Teaching them how to use computers, texting, and snapchat. Taking selfies and showing them how to do it was a pure thrill. The smiles on their faces was absolutely priceless.

I have been dedicated to my academics, asking questions in class when I didn’t understand fully the topic at hand. I wanted to seek, understand, and increase my knowledge on the subject. I have worked very hard for the grades I have received. I am very thankful that I graduated high school in June in the top ten percent of my class.

I have started my next journey into college taking summer courses at the University of Central Florida. It is overwhelming and exciting at the same time. Getting acclimated in the college life is a challenge. I will always be thankful to Mr. Wells, who was one of my teachers in the tenth grade for the lesson he taught me. “You will succeed just by trying and always believe in yourself.” Keeping those words within my heart, I know I will succeed because I am passionate about being an occupational therapist as my career.
