Is it really important? by Alena - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I am a firm believer in Eleanor Roosevelt's famous quote “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Granted, when she made that lovely declaration, college was significantly less expensive and more affordable. When I graduated high school in 2004, I was a young 18 years old and had no idea what I wanted to be. I was enrolled at the college I am at currently, but had no clue what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Neither one of my parents were college educated, so they didn’t really have anything to offer me in terms of how to withdraw so I’m not academically affected. I just stopped attending classes and now have to look at that gross 0.00 gpa. I am looking forward to doing extremely well this semester and applying for amnesty.
What I needed at the age of 18 wasn’t a college education. I needed some real world life experience, and that’s exactly what I got for the next 15 years. I moved in with my sister in another state and started waiting tables and got humbled real quick. I eventually entered into beauty school and became a licensed professional cosmetologist. I have been doing that as my career for the last 12 years. I could retire doing that, but not without a lot of hard, back breaking work. I wanted to look into other options that would include helping people and earning a degree.
All a degree seems like is a piece of paper, but that piece of paper opens up so many doors. I wish to pursue my masters after my bachelors, and the dream end goal would be a doctorate before the age of 50. I want to help children with mental disorders. Or really just work with children on some sort of a clinical level. I can and do help children now, but without a college education I won’t be able to apply the techniques effectively, nor will I have any clue as to what I’m talking about. So is college important? It depends on who you’re asking. To me, a college education is very important to attain what it is I am looking for in the future.
