Expansion by Alec - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

If I could use one word to describe why I want to attend college, the word expansion comes to mind. My entire life, I have lived in the small town of Norwalk, Ohio. Although there is nothing wrong with where I have grown up, I just know I want to see more from the world. That is why I am very fortunate to say that I was accepted into The Ohio State University. When I am attending college, I will expand my horizons by learning about my true passion, taking in all that Columbus has to offer, and finding people that have similar and different interests than me.
Throughout high school, a problem that I have had is that I always have to sit through certain classes that I have very little interest in. When I am in college though, I will get to study and learn what truly interests me. I know that I will be more engaged in the learning and truly take in all of the information being presented to me. In college, I will study to pursue a career in the medical field. Whether it is in nutrition, exercise science, or just general health, I know I will love what I am learning. My positive attitude will then lead to me truly loving my career, since it will be in the field I am truly passionate about.
Columbus is a city that has plenty for me to enjoy that I would not be able to get in Norwalk. One thing that comes to mind is the fitness community. Every year, Columbus hosts the Arnold Sports Festival in celebration of many athletic events. This includes one of my passions; powerlifting. When I went to the Arnold Sports Festival last year, I had such a great time being around like minded people and seeing powerlifting records shattered by some of the strongest people in the world. Besides hosting the Arnold Sports Festival, Columbus is home to many well-known and respected powerlifting gyms. These gyms are full of strong and very intelligent people that I know will only push me in my passion for the sport. Being in Columbus will only push me to be better in that aspect of my life.
Music and art have always been an important part of my life. In my free time, I love listening to music and making art. The Ohio State University realizes that these activities are important to students, so one program they have is reselling concert tickets to students for a cheaper price. Skully’s Music-Diner is also a music venue that is located just five minutes away from the campus. If I ever feel like enjoying some live music, I can just walk and enjoy that luxury that I would not have at home. I will also be able to enjoy the Columbus Museum of Art in my free time. During my Honor Trip visit to D.C., we were able to visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum and while we were there I kept thinking about how I wish I could visit an art museum often. Having the Columbus Museum of art close by will then allow me to enjoy art frequently on my own time.
During my time in college, I know I will find people that are very similar, but also very different from me. The Ohio State University will have hundreds of clubs that I will be able to join and meet new people. These people will have similar interests to me, but they will also be very different. Since The Ohio State University has students from all over the U.S., and even the world, I will be able to participate in a variety of events that I would not be getting at home. This includes their Powerlifting Team, Introspect Psychology club, Tabletop and Roleplaying Gaming Club, and Vinyl Record Club. All of these clubs are a few examples of the variety of activities I can participate in when I am at college to meet more people.
Expansion is the perfect word to describe why I want to attend college. I will be able to learn what I am truly passionate about in the career I wish to pursue. When I am in Columbus, I will enjoy everything the city has to offer me. Participating in clubs will allow me to meet people from all over. During my time in college, I will not take it for granted and I will take every opportunity given to me.
