History and what it means to me by Alec - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I was a kid and started building and collecting medieval lego figures and castles I have been amazed by history, especially medieval history. Although I had a very limited knowledge about medieval history at the time, I was still aware of the most beloved parts of medieval history; kings and queens, knights, chivalry, and castles. The thought of two knights battling it out over a princess made me so excited and promoted me to keep learning more and more about the time period and eventually about all historical time periods, not just the events during the medieval time period.
As I grew up I became an avid History Channel watcher and would always make sure that I had free time available for when the channel aired a historical documentary. If I had a DVR, or any recording device in general, it probably would have saved me a lot of effort but at the time I did not and was forced to watch it live. One day, on a school day, History Channel was airing a 3 part series on the medieval time period, the problem was it started when I was at school, and me, being the devoted historian I was, faked being sick so I could be picked up early from school, and thus allowing me to watch the documentaries without missing any parts.
Currently I am a business marketing major but I have always had that part of me that wanted to be a history teacher. During high school I made sure to go out of my way to take every history class possible, from US history to Asian history, I took it all. Not only were the subjects fascinating but I also had some of the best and most influential teachers that continue to be role models to me to this day. These teachers gave me a passion for history and made me want to become a history teacher even more for my career path and to eventually major in history in college. Although this dream did not become a reality when I realized I wanted to pursue a business degree so I could enjoy a more prosperous future, the idea of becoming a history teacher will always remain with me.
History has always amazed me and throughout my whole life I have always been fascinating and inspired to learn more about the history of the world, therefore if roles were reversed and I became a teacher I would, without a doubt, become a history teacher.
