High School: Expect Some Change by Alden - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
One of the biggest things about high school that I wish I was told at the beginning is about how much you and everyone around you will change. Throughout the three and a half years, me and my friend group have changed dramatically. People around me have been shaped by high school to how they will be the rest of their lives, and so have I.
The first time I walked through the doors into high school, I had no idea what to expect. The building was huge compared to middle school, and it was daunting to say the least. I now know that one of the most important parts of high school is the social aspect, making and keeping friends, and adapting to broaden your friend group. This is one of the most unforeseen effects high school has on people, and it is not talked about enough. It would definitely be a benefit for incoming freshman to know that they and their friends will change, and heed that advice however they want to.
Not everyone will change for the better, and not everyone will change for the worse. If you come into high school expecting these changes, you can recognize them quicker and be able to make decisions about who you want to be your friends so you can have the most or least amount of success possible. It is important to be able to recognize when you are changing, emotionally and physically, and high school changes people. While this is not inherently a bad thing, it is good to be able to recognize it. This is why I would tell this to a group of incoming freshman, to try to guide them and let them know what to expect on a personal and social level.
