My Personal Experience and Where it has led me- Alba Munoz by Alba - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I had already decided I wanted to major in the medical field, more specifically in pharmaceutical science, since the beginning of my freshman year in Highschool. My grandmother had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and dementia and her health was quickly deteriorating. I had already come accustomed to assisting her on a daily basis. By my junior year I was already taking classes to get a certification in patient care to help my grandmother as she struggled to stand and became even more disoriented. Throughout the time I have taken care of my grandmother I have often questioned if this is what I wish to do for the rest of my life. At times I felt I was pushed to the edge but strangely I could not imagine a different career.
One personal experience I had with my grandmother that set my career in stone was waking up one night to see my grandmother shaken as she ran into my room. I had awoken to see her in my doorway. At that moment I just remember getting up and calming her racing mind and slowly guiding her to her room then preparing her a small snack. Being there and being able to help my grandmother in times of panic is what motivated me to succeed in the medical field. Why I choose pharmaceutical science in particular is to research and dive deep into the history of medicine and how it can assist patients with terminal illness and hopefully create alternative methods of treatment for patients with Alzheimer's disease. I do not plan to stop their either I want to broaden the scope of medicine around the world and help as many people while sending a positive image of medication.
Everything I do is for my family and I have no regrets in the major I have chosen and intend to pursue. I thank my grandmother for allowing me to find my passion in the medical field. No career is easy and you must sacrifice a part of yourself but if it is something you wholeheartedly enjoy you find everything to have brought you to that moment worth it.
