Step One in Being Successful in College: Obtain Leadership Skills by Alanya - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

In elementary school, it’s not very uncommon when a teacher says, “follow the leader”. A leader was usually chosen if they demonstrated core values and was a great example for the rest of the students. However, as years progressed and the leaders wanted to add a little “spice” to our daily activities, some leaders were no longer setting a great example. The older an individual gets, they have to take on the responsibility of making sure to enhance their leadership skills by themselves. Therefore, by the time a student is attending college, it’s important that they do have some form of leadership skills to be successful in college.

As society ages, the definition of leadership continues to change. Leadership no longer necessarily means to follow someone who sets a great example. However, leadership can be a synonym for courage. It can represent the idea that individuals have to show leadership within themselves and to prevent being molded into the similar sculptures society creates.

Within college, it is very prevalent that there will be distractions. Those distractions range from parties, the beach, mountains, sunrise, sunsets, etc. It takes a lot of grit within an individual to ensure that they put aside a small amount of satisfaction to focus on the bigger picture. These are the scenarios in which leadership skills are necessary. When a student has at least some leadership skills, that’s all they need to ensure that they are making decisions that will be beneficial in the long run.

Another thing about leadership skills and college success is that it’s important to make sure others around are just as successful. As a leader and someone who cares about the individuals within their community, it’s important to look out not only for one’s self, but others that may be positively impacted as well. In college, there may be many other students who are easily distracted, but as a leader who wants success for all, just by letting the student know they’re not making the right decision, you may have just saved an individual who almost walked past the path of success.

Overall, it’s very important to obtain leadership skills within college. It ensures that you have grit and are willing to sacrifice activities that give little pleasure, but will have even greater success in the end.
