Title: Breaking Barriers and Constructing Bridges by Alana - April 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Alana Cunigan, a rising college freshman who has been accepted into several reputable institutions such as Howard University, Virginia State University, and Bowie State University. I am an ambitious student whose inkling for healthcare studies resonates deeply with my personal story and societal values. My academic pursuit seeks to major in Nursing and Psychology, as well as Pre-Med, with ultimate ambitions of establishing a career as a trauma nurse. I am motivated to succeed acadically not just for myself, but to advance my community and shatter stereotype barriers that have been historically seconded to African American communities.
My motivation to pursue my academic goals stems largely from personal and identity factors. Born as an African American woman, an inherent desire to bring a significant, generational shift within my family and society serves as my fundamental inspiration. My parents, affectionate and hardworking, despite their circumstances, have always dreamt of their children earning a college degree. It’s their relentless daily struggle and humble income living situation that fuel my motivation to be the first in my family to graduate from college and get a well-paying job. This is not just a personal quest but a commitment towards possibly alleviating the burdens that my family currently endures.
Studying Pre-Med, Nursing and Psychology, my goals extend beyond personal interests into society's realms, striving towards the eviction of stereotypes that have burdened African American communities. It is disheartening that Black Americans are often stereotyped as ignorant — an unfounded generalization that I aspire to challenge and change, one degree at a time. I am determined to add to the existing pool of black healthcare practitioners, hoping to inspire more people to join this noble profession and reject the societal dictations of prejudice.
Certainly, maintaining the focus needed to accomplish these goals demands a degree of perseverance and fortitude. Thus, my strategy involves remaining mentally prepared and gradually achieving my targets. My strategy stems from the understanding that major goals cannot be achieved overnight, especially goals as hefty as fighting societal stereotypes. Additionally, by choosing majors I am passionate about, the journey becomes enjoyable instead of a strenuous battle. My strong High School GPA of 4 is an evidence of my commitment, passion and consistency.
In conclusion, my motivation to pursue academia and remain focused therein comes from a desire to be a trailblazer; a pioneer within my family and a positive representation of the potential that African American communities can harness when granted the opportunity. I yearn for change, societal growth, and an overhaul of unfair stereotypes. This scholarship will undoubtedly provide substantial help towards achieving my goals, and for that, I extend my gratitude for your consideration.
Thank you for this opportunity.
