Kids love playing in the dirt. Children come inside their houses only to be covered head to toe in mud and dirt, claiming they were digging for buried treasure. A part of me will always love digging in the dirt for buried treasure, but now as I am growing up I found another reason to play in the dirt. I love digging in the dirt to plant beautiful flowers. Working in a garden helps me relax and makes me happy. I am excited to learn everything I can about planting flowers and keeping them alive. I will be majoring in Horticultural Science Management: Ornamentals and Landscape Technology at North Carolina State University in the fall of 2023.
Ornamental and Landscape Technology is a flowery way of saying I want to plant flowers professionally. It was not until the pandemic that I realized I had a green thumb and enjoyed being out in the garden. Like most people, staying quarantined drove me wild. I found a way to help me cope during those times. I would go to our backyard to find something to distract myself from going stir-crazy. We had a few weeds growing where they were not wanted so I decided to pull them up. Most people find pulling weeds a tedious chore, but it calms me. The repetitive motions, the attention to detail, and the sharp yank put my mind at ease. With the weeds gone, there was a big empty area in the middle of our backyard. My mom and I decided to plant some flowers. What else were we supposed to do with that giant empty spot? We planted a rainbow of different flowers and we loved it. Making our backyard appealing and bright helped cheer me up. We did not want to stop there so we continued to fix up our garden. Ripping tree roots out of the ground and chopping and trimming bushes are helpful ways to get rid of anger.
Going into Horticultural Science Management: Ornamentals and Landscape Technology will help me get paid to do what I love. Working hard to make the earth more beautiful is something I would love to do for the rest of my life. I will be able to help others see the beauty of nature again.
