Thinking outside the box by AJ - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

Thinking outside the box means thinking in a way that is different than the normal response would be. It means expanding your mind to broaden your thoughts, deepen your understanding, and go above and beyond expectations.
An example of this would be when an assignment is given in class, such as giving a presentation on a chapter of a book in history class. Instead of doing a normal power point presentation of the chapter, you could reenact a scene of an event that happened in the chapter with some of you friends. This would draw the spectating students in and help them experience the chapter in a new and dynamic way. The friends helping to reenact the scene would dive into the story and also experience it instead of just hearing about it. For all the students involved, they'd have a richer, more fuller memory experience to draw upon later. The information would stick better. Another way to complete the chapter presentation could be drawing a map of the region with pictures that represent an event that happened in an area. Having drawn the map, I would remember the content better, as that used a different part of the brain. Having the map for the other students to see would allow them to have a visual representation of the material, again allowing it to stick better. It would be expected by a teacher or guardian to do what they asked, but why just do that when you can go beyond what is expected and impress them.
When your mom tells you to clean your room, do not just clean your room, but instead clean your brother's room as well. Rather than doing what is expected from your mom, you are thinking outside the box and helping other people as well. In conclusion, thinking outside the box is doing more than what is expected of you and not only doing it for the better of yourself, but also for the better of others.
