A Crucial Conversation: A Catalyst for Change and Empathy by Aiyanna - March 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a current high school junior, who is more than just a diligent student, I was unfortunately surprised to encounter an experience that helped me grow in my understanding of the world around me. This happened over an ordinary lunch at school, an environment where we frequently encounter diverse opinions and perspectives. Seated at our table was a fellow student who raised an issue that I found significantly disturbing. Having respect for difference in views, we engaged in a discussion about a woman's plight during an unpleasant encounter at a party. According to this individual, if a woman gets assaulted in her inebriated state, the fault lies with her. This was not a perspective that sat well with me.
I, Aiyanna Gervin, believe that we are a result of our experiences and molds us into the person we hope to become. Being able to yearn towards the thought of studying subjects like Social Sciences, Philosophy, and Psychology, I am committed to understanding human behavior and morality. My academic work, which shows my strong dedication, mirrors in my GPA of 3.5, and my deep-rooted interest in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement.
This incident compelled me to take a stand and voice my belief, "How about guys just don't assault?". Every person should respect the personal boundaries and consent of others, regardless of circumstances. This unwarranted remark at our lunch table motivated me not only to defend the integrity of all individuals who have been victimized but also to educate my peer, who seemed to lack understanding.
Misinterpretations and biases often flourish within societies soaked in stereotypes. As a woman of mixed race, I regularly witness the different spectrums of cultural nuances and prejudices within the same society. Thus, I find it noteworthy to contribute, intervene and sometimes counteract when faced with misconstrued perspectives.
Our heated yet impactful exchange taught me the importance of confronting harmful beliefs, even when it's uncomfortable. It offered me a chance to empathize, promoting a culture of respect and negating a victim-blaming mindset. This discussion allowed me to practice standing against opinions that bear the potential to cause harm, drawing me a step closer to my public relation goals.
The occurrence also highlighted my dedication to my intended majors at the illustrious universities such as John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Kirkwood Community College, and Portland Beau Police Training Academy, where I aspire to bring a substantial change in the sectors of forensics, criminal investigation, and social work. The conversation solidified my belief that harmful perspectives can only be reformed when they are respectfully and effectively challenged.
As I extended my outlook and stood up for the cause, I realized the importance of being a positive voice in a world battling ignorance. I learned the value of raising awareness about our legal rights as a contributing member of society. This ignited a deeper interest in pursuing further study of psychology, hoping one day to apply this knowledge for the betterment of society.
In the face of adversity, transformation ensues. Challenges grant us opportunities to step out of our comfort zone, to evolve, and impact those around us positively. This encounter wasn't just about differing perspectives at a lunch table. It was about giving a voice to the voiceless and fostering empathy, resilience, and tolerance.
This willingness to emerge from these situations as a better individual makes me confident that I, Aiyanna Gervin, qualify as an ideal candidate for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest. I am committed to turning such experiences into essential learning opportunities, transforming not just my thinking but also my actions for the larger good of society.
It wasn't just a lunch table discussion to me. It was a lesson about humanity, empathy, and the power of one voice; ultimately, the conversation molded me into becoming a compassionate, outspoken, and forward-looking individual, prepped to handle any curveball life decides to throw at me. I can’t just accept society as is so I am so daring to change it.
Indeed, a respectful and understanding listener today makes a convincing and empathetic leader tomorrow. And I aim to be that leader.
