From Curious Child to Professional by Aisha - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
From a young age, I was fascinated with how the mind works, not just scientifically, but also how it affects the lives of people daily. My mother, being a psychotherapist, has given me personal insight into how understanding the brain can make a difference in people's lives by helping them overcome obstacles. Witnessing her work has inspired and ignited my desire to learn neuroscience as the foundation for my passion to become a psychiatrist.
My coursework has done more than strengthened this passion. With the Certified Medical Assistant curriculum in my high school and my concurrent enrollment at Lone Star College for my Associate of Science, I have gained hands-on exposure to anatomy, physiology, and psychology. These classes revealed how complex and interconnected the nervous system is, and how psychology and biology cannot be separated. This concurrent enrollment program has challenged me academically and prepared me to study neuroscience with rigor and interest.
I applied to the University of Texas at Austin, and was accepted, due to its extensive research in fields like neural circuitry and mental health, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of their neuroscience program. The study of neuroscience will enable me to study both the biological and psychological aspects of the brain while getting me ready for medical school. Ultimately, my dream is to bridge science and compassion, to bring neuroscience from the laboratory to the patient's bedside. It is not merely an intellectual decision to major in this field; it is the extension of a lifetime of care instilled in me by individuals such as my mother.
