Zoology: the Study of Animals by Ainsley - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

For my major in college I choose Zoology, because of all the opportunities it provides in career paths and coursework. I have always loved animals and wanted to care for them in some way, but I could not always decide what career to do so in. Zoology leaves open many of the career paths I could follow to take care of animals. The current career path I’m planning on taking is becoming a veterinarian. A Zoology degree covers most of the same coursework as a pre-veterinary program so I could easily continue to a veterinary school with the correct coursework. With this degree I could also, instead of becoming a veterinarian, go onto some other career with animals like working at a zoo or a lab. Choosing this general major opens up more career options than just a pre-veterinary degree does.
Another reason I have chosen to major in Zoology is because of the coursework itself. As I mentioned, I have always wanted to care for animals, but not only could I not decide what career to do so in, but I also currently can not decide what kinds of animals I want to care for. By majoring in Zoology I would get the opportunity to learn about many different kinds of animals before deciding on which particular kind to focus my career on. While studying Zoology in college I also want to observe and see if there are any fields concerning certain kinds of animals that require more attention than others. What I mean by this is that there are many kinds of animals in the world and some are more well loved than others. If there is a particular field with a certain kind of animal that needs more assistance or attention than another I would like to try and fill that need. This is something that I will hopefully be able to watch for while in my program.
I want to major in Zoology for both of these reasons, for the opportunities in career options and coursework, but at the heart of both of these reasons is my love for animals. I have always loved animals and in my future career I want to care for them in any way I can, and majoring in Zoology will help me accomplish that.
