A coach is so much more than a leader in sports by Aimee - May 2024 Scholarship Essay

Volleyball has been my whole life. My calendar was filled with after school private lessons, weekend tournaments, and three-times a week practices. It felt like that gym was my second home; if I was not at my house, I was at the gym trying to get better. The only way I was able to get better was because my coach, Tom Murphy, was able to push me to my limits.
My coach eventually turned into a father figure of mine that I looked up to, especially because my father died after the age of nine I lost my father. My coach was more than a coach. He would obviously help me with volleyball, but he would also help me with life goals and share his experiences to inspire me. Every practice I would show up to he would always ask what colleges I was looking at, what I was going to major in, and what my life after college would look like. This caused me to actually think and plan out my future farther than I was picturing. Now I am going to attend Washington State University next year and am majoring in Kinesiology with the plan of being a physical therapist after school.
Before my coach started to push my future, I was just planning on coasting through college and seeing how it would go without much thought put into it. But I am glad my coach was able to lead me to plan my life and set goals for my future and not just help me with volleyball.
