The Future: Computers by Aidan - February 2018 Scholarship Essay
Computers. The use of computers would definitely be an integral part of education. I mean, they kinda are today, but computers aren’t part of every classroom. Schools don’t have enough budget to buy computers for thousands of students; they also can’t ensure that every student will have a computer at home either. If they can’t ensure every student could use a computer, then schools would create an inequality within themselves. However, by 2038--20 years since today--computers would have become cheaper.
Computers were developed in the 1950s. By the 21st century, they’ve become infinitely smaller than before. The cost has also dipped by thousands of dollars. Today, chromebooks are about $200. In 20 years, the cost of a chromebook would probably be about $20. That’s pretty cheap! The cost of supplying a school would be 1/10 the cost it is now. $20 is about the cost of a water bottle now. This would eliminate the cost needed for papers and pencils in schools. Resources and lessons would be sent directly to the students’ computers. Today, textbooks are $100; that’s five times the cost of a chromebook in 20 years! Imagine the money schools would save! They’d ACTUALLY be able to afford to clean the boy’s restrooms!
Schools today are already making the transition to computers. My english teacher allows us to type our essays in class, rather than using the traditional pen and paper. Typing makes it easier to read and grade essays. Computers are obviously going to be an integral part of education; the only question is: how long?
