I´m Thankful For AVID by Ahyiyah - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
After being in school for 14 years I realized the one aspect of my school career I am most thankful for the skills taught in AVID because they have taught me college readiness, organization skills, and time management.
The class is all about ensuring I complete all the necessary steps to increase my chances of being accepted to college. For example I completed this yearly assignment called an Event Page. It encouraged me to join extracurricular activities, and participate in community service. Now my senior year in AVID is all about finalizing my school resume, completing F.A.F.S.A, getting letters of recommendation, filling out college and scholarship applications.
Along with preparing for college I learned efficient organizational skills. In AVID we are taught to take the initiative in our organization . Instead of waiting until it becomes a problem; like struggling to keep up with due dates, and finding worksheets. Staying organized is important because it helps you turn in all of your assignments in a timely manner. To ensure I write important dates for applications, scholarships, and class assignments, in class my teacher gives assignments like binder, and agenda checks.
After strengthening my organization skills I started to prioritize my time. I learned to stop taking unnecessary breaks, and use valuable time for studying difficult subjects. It is important to use your time wisely because assignments can be time consuming. Using my time management skills has helped me to balance my different extracurricular activities, with my physical therapy appointments and school work.
Through the time spent in school, AVID has provided me with the necessary skills to use my time wisely, prepare for college and maintain efficient records of school work and documents necessary to send to schools I am applying to. I’m thankful for these aspects of my education because I did not have to learn these skills the hard way. The lessons taught in AVID have been a blessing in my current high school career and will be a solid foundation in the near future.
