Studying Abroad As A Requirement? by Ahtziri - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Studying abroad should be a key component in any college student’s life. I believe it will capture a student’s mind and soul because of the experience, exposure, and personal
development a student will gain. A requirement to have college students study abroad is very important because of the effect it will have on them, such as the different ideas they will obtain on cultural, and the surroundings of those who live there.
The White House itself said “ studying abroad is a critical component to deepening and broadening with citizens overseas”, and I completely agree with this statement. A college student studying abroad will be able to have an opportunity to see the world. Students will be able to experience a brand new country that will include activities and customs that will help them become more engaged in learning and discovering the world around them. They will be able to take in new cultural experiences by having a better understanding for the nation’s people and history. Learning a new language is also another great opportunity a student can receive. Immersing yourself into learning a new language will only be better be if you travel to the place the language is spoken at most. Students will see new places that will broadened their thoughts. Those who incorporate world travels in their lives open new doors filled with possabilities. They sometimes find a desire to live and work there. Especially when the time comes that you are in the search for a job, adding that you studied abroad may boost your chance of getting the job.
Making it required for college students to study abroad will enable them to get a feel of how it feels to live independently. They will learn how to make decisions based on what they want and not what their family is forcing them to do. I believe studying abroad will give students peace of mind and help them relax and take in the new information they are experiencing all on their own. Those studying abroad become explorers of their new nation and discover the curiosity of beginning in a different environment. Studying in a divergent place will also give you the opportunity to meet new people and make friends who might share the same interests. Students who are barely out of high school and are entering college are learning how to save money, studying abroad will give you the chance to learn how to finance. How much to spend and how much you save will be a major factor of becoming independent. If they make a requirement to have students study abroad then they will get to experience two different surroundings.
In conclusion, college students should be required to study abroad because of the wonderful experiences and opportunities it will bring to students. Even to those who are afraid of going out of their comfort zones because they are barely starting college and aren’t really aware of what it might bring. You never know the people you might meet or the experience you won’t get anywhere else. An experience like this will be very beneficial. Although it might be scary for many, it’s an amazing opportunity to take advantage of. Fear shouldn't get in the way of wanting to study abroad because it’s a one and a lifetime experience. It will definitely be different because I believe it will help students grow in general. Although it might also be expensive the possibility of going somewhere like you never been will never come again.
