PhD in food science by ahmed - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
Ahmed M. Gomaa December 2016
When I was nine, my parents gave me my first food encyclopedia book. As a child my first instinct was to see the vitamins and minerals effects in the fruits and vegetables chapter. I was not just fascinated with the picture in the book, but more importantly with what it represented as a health information. In June of 2011, I received my bachelor of science from Alexandria University in food science and technology. As a food technology student at Alexandria University I was able to develop a breadth of skills, including my ability to work in teams both as a leader and contributor, my technical writing ability, and my interest in research. During the fourth and last year in college, the first semester I have studied the science of fats and oil and the technology of their production, the preservation of food by freezing and drying where I presented a seminar on the freezing of the orange fruit and drying of its peels, moreover I studied food microbiology, going through the microorganisms world and their classification according to their action on food, biological and physical properties and I perfectly skilled the Food microbiology laboratory aspects as preparing medias, dilutions, streaking & spreading techniques, colonies counts, etc.
After my graduation I was hired as a production & quality engineer in Givrex frozen food company to strengthen my practical background and work experience, where I have really experienced real situations and problems in the food preparation and preservation industry and took the responsibility of supervising the production line to ensure the quality of the product since the raw material stage to the final packaged stage. In addition, I did experiments in the factory lab, especially on the artichokes. After graduation I didn’t forget my ultimate goal which is obtaining a post graduate degree in food science and nutrition so I didn’t waste time and I prepared for the TOEFL exam that I passed at September 2011 and I applied for Brooklyn college’s master of science in nutrition program. Throughout my graduate education, there were several classes and assignments that especially expanded and developed my skills. The skills I acquired during my graduate experience provided a solid foundation for me to draw upon as I pursued my passion in life and moved to next level toward my PhD in food science.
The overarching theme in all of these experiences is my continued desire to learn, hence my desire to pursue a research degree in food science. I have been accepted into Alabama A & M food science PhD program for the spring 2016 semester, and I feel that VARSITY TUTORS scholarship program would provide an excellent financial support for me to further develop the skills necessary to excel both in the professional and academic world. I also believe it would give me the opportunity to contribute to the research that is currently being undertaken by the school got accepted in. A scholarship award would help me focus more on my schoolwork program, push me further towards my food science degree, and boost my self-confidence, knowing that I not only completed a very important task, but also took the responsibility of creating a foundation for getting me closer to my career goals. I strongly believe that I have the academic and professional experience needed to make my time at the research field valuable while in turn supplementing ongoing research in the field of food science and technology; and VARSITY TUTORS program would help me achieve these great expectations by reducing my stress over the lack of money and giving me the opportunity to focus on a well-rounded college experience. I intend to use my doctorate degree to develop technologies that will benefit society and hopefully the world as a whole.
