Chem Trails by Adrian - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

I have faced several challenging academic experiences throughout my high school years, but one stands out as particularly impactful. It was during my junior year, in chemistry class. Chemistry was a subject that fascinated me because it is the foundation of pharmacy, which I am passionate about pursuing in college. However, despite my interest, I struggled to keep up with the complex concepts and equations. My grades were slipping, and I was worried that I would not be able to improve them.

The challenge was not just about understanding the material; it was also about managing my time and motivation. With a GPA of 2.9, I knew I needed to work harder to reach my goals, but I was also balancing other classes and responsibilities. It felt overwhelming at times, and I started to doubt myself and my ability to succeed in a field I cared so much about.

To overcome this, I knew I had to change my approach. First, I reached out for help. I asked my chemistry teacher for extra help after school, and she was incredibly supportive. She explained the concepts in different ways until they clicked for me. I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met twice a week to review material, work through practice problems, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment made learning more engaging and less intimidating.

In addition to seeking help from others, I had to improve my study habits. I started creating a study schedule that broke down the material into manageable chunks. Instead of cramming the night before a test, I reviewed a little bit each day. This consistency helped me retain information better and reduced my stress levels. I also used online resources, like educational videos and interactive quizzes, to reinforce what I was learning in class.

Another important step was learning to manage my time more effectively. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments, tests, and study sessions. This helped me prioritize my tasks and avoid last-minute rushes. I also set specific goals for each study session, which kept me focused and motivated. Over time, these small changes made a big difference in my understanding and performance in chemistry.

The most significant lesson I learned from this experience was the importance of perseverance and asking for help when needed. It taught me that it is okay to struggle and that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness. I also learned that improvement takes time and effort, but it is possible with dedication and the right strategies.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I was able to raise my chemistry grade significantly, which boosted my confidence and reinforced my desire to pursue a career in pharmacy. This experience showed me that I could overcome academic challenges, and it prepared me for future obstacles I might face in college.

Looking back, I am grateful for the support I received from my teacher and classmates, as well as the lessons I learned about myself. This experience has made me more resilient and determined to succeed in my studies at the University of the Incarnate Word. I am excited to continue exploring my interests in pharmacy, biology, and chemistry, and I am ready to face any challenges that come my way.

In conclusion, overcoming my struggles in chemistry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me valuable skills and gave me the confidence to pursue my goals. I am committed to continuing this journey and making the most of the opportunities that come my way. Thank you for considering my application for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest.
