General Psychology by Adinarys - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I were a college professor, I would enjoy teaching General Psychology. Psychology has a variety of subjects that are beneficial for the student to learn and be able to apply it to themselves in their every day lives. It is a course that challenges our beliefs and can change the way we perceive certain matters. In addition, it can help us understand other individuals that suffer from psychological disorders.
One of the many subjects from general psychology that I would enjoy teaching would be about the brain and its' functions. I believe that learning about our minds and having a clear understanding of how the brain works, will lead to a better understanding of ourselves. Another subject that would be beneficial for the students would be cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology provides many strategies that will help the students make wise decisions. For instance, it teaches the students how to analyze situations from different points of view, to consider the benefits and the detriments of a decision, and how will the decision satisfy their requirements.
General Psychology is a course that can challenge our beliefs. Throughout our lives we have our minds set to certain beliefs. These beliefs mostly depend on how we were raised and what our parents/guardians taught us. As human beings we like to believe that our beliefs are "right" and any other idea that contradicts what we believe in is "wrong." Nevertheless, general psychology will teach students to be open-minded and think critically.
Because many students go through depression, anxiety attacks, eating disorders, etc., I believe that by taking general psychology they will be able to learn ways to cope with any disorder that is affecting them. For instance, general psychology provides a clear understanding of many disorders by providing information of how they develop, the general symptoms, and ways to prevent/control them. With this knowledge, students will be able to have a better understanding of their relatives, friends, or acquaintance that may suffer from any psychological disorder.
General psychology comes with so many benefits that I believe it should be a require class in every University/College. As a professor of such course, I would try my best to give a clear understanding of every subject. I will enjoy helping my students have a better understanding of themselves and their peers.
