Studying With Disney by Adessa - May 2016 Scholarship Essay
Twice a year, thousands of people both young and old come into contact with something so frightening, so stressful–something known as final exams. Almost every college student struggles with how to get a good grade on their exams, yet the question remains on how they study to receive those passing and excellent grades. Personally, there are two study methods that have assisted me the most for my final exams: studying my notes and anything related to Disney. Immediately, one may think that I’m either joking or don’t take my studying seriously. First of all, I’m not joking. Secondly, whether you believe it or not, both of those methods together have aided me in receiving A’s. I desire to be a Disney Animator, therefore I work hard by starring at my notes from class for hours and take breaks by researching all artistic things of Disney, such as watching movie clips, listening to songs, memorizing whole scenes, and reading the Oh My Disney blog.
No matter how magical or depressing my day is or what kind of college assignments or quizzes I must complete, I have always found uplifting and helpfulness through Disney. This Spring 2016 semester I was faced with difficult weekly quizzes in my website design class. To study for these words and codings, I associated them with Disney lyrics and lines to help me remember them. For example, the matchmaker in Disney’s Mulan had once said, “Now, pour the tea.” With that line memorized, it assisted me in remembering the website design principles of POUR, which are perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. Whenever my brain appeared to slow down on the studying department, I would simply read one or three Oh My Disney blog posts. Afterwards, I could suddenly remember several things of what I had been studying for hours. Believe it or not, this Disney study method actually works for me because Disney brings me happiness and inspiration.
Though enjoying all things Disney is a fun way to take a break, taking the time to actually read over and study my notes has been a very effective method. For several minutes over a couple of times a day, I would pull out my notes from class and read over them more than once. Instead of waiting till the day before exams to study, I refrained from doing the things I do for fun and sat down at my desk to study. I’ve learned that I can’t just acquire that knowledge of every computer related term and coding in just a day. I believe in taking several fifteen minutes of each of my days to sit and study. Reading PowerPoint notes provided by my professors, evaluating my own notes from class, and writing down key points and phrases from the textbooks are three ways that I’ve incorporated into this method of studying.
I believe that if anyone studies to the best of their ability and attempts to do their best, they will receive the good grade that they deserve. If I would have ignored these two combined methods of studying and perseverance, then I may have failed. Thankfully, I never gave up and this is an important thing to remember when it comes to preparing for those scary final exams. When I am faced with studying, projects and final exams, I remember this quote from Walt Disney: “All of our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” I believe that this lesson on dreams, courage, and determination teaches us college students to never give up and work hard in our studies for that A is only a final exam away.
