Forget Equality by Addisyn - April 2023 Scholarship Essay

“People need to be treated with equity, not equality, and that is something that is often not correctly perceived correctly by the general public.”- a quote that I recently learned from a college professor who had an intense impact on me. When my professor first stated this piece of information, there was quite a bit of confusion crossing the faces of the students in his classroom. We had never been taught that there was a real difference between the two. However, if you look up the definitions to both of these words, equity is often described as being fairly treated and equality is described as likeness or sameness. If I had unlimited resources available to me, I would change the way that people everywhere are treated.
This statement is bold, I know, but it is something that I believe could be done right now, given the correct group of people and resources. I can see this dream of mine, people being treated with equity, starting out with the homeless population. The best way that I can think of to go about something like this would be to simply advertise and seek out members of this population to participate in an entry-level job that would show that they are worthy employees and capable human beings. This part of my plan would greatly depend on the unlimited time factor, since it might entail physically seeking out individuals who would qualify. However, many of the homeless population have potentially fallen onto the wrong path of life and would simply need a helping hand, or a rehabilitation center, that could get them back onto their feet. These activities would give way for equity as each human being would be given a fair chance to improve their lives.
The next order of business for me would be to visit some developing countries and work through the same kind of idea in these areas as well. I would use my unlimited money to set up options for struggling communities to feed, clothe, and care for their populations. I would do my best to give these communities only what they needed or asked for so as not to intrude on their culture or ways of living and to avoid turning their communities into something they had not imagined. My last order of business would be to do everything I possibly could to restore endangered species, and to restore nature and the planet back to a livable condition for years to come. Restoring these species would go hand in hand with restoring the planet as I would designate large areas of land, any space that I could find, to the animals that were most in need without making any species become invasive or endangering other species by allowing animals to become invasive. Animals, as well as humans, also deserve the opportunity to have equity. Every animal deserves the chance to thrive, so restoring their natural habitats and allowing them to return to their natural lives is only fair.
My hope for these plans would be that they fulfill the intentions that I had and create a better life for humans and animals all across the planet. I would also hope that equity replaces the word and actions of equality more frequently and only when it suits the situation.
