Informal Education for Academic Success by Addison - June 2024 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I was always taught how important my education was. Generally, I assumed this education came from learning in the classroom. However, as I’m finishing my high school career, I’ve found that some of the most important lessons I’ve learned have been from outside of the classroom. Many of the most important lessons I’ve learned have come from my family, teammates, coaches, and even coworkers. From observing all of these important people in my life, I’ve been able to see what actions are right and wrong, what values mean the most to me, and new opportunities to try.
Informal education has played a role in my academic success by providing me with these lessons and information that I’ve been able to use in my academic success. Learning about the important lessons has allowed me to learn how to prioritize, persevere, and be responsible. For example, I learned the importance of perseverance. My family always taught me to keep trying and pushing through, even when times are tough. Being persevering has helped me enormously in academics by allowing me to push through difficult assignments and tests.
My teammates and coaches have also given me informal education that has led to my academic success. From playing sports, I have learned the value of teamwork, hard work, and leadership. Being on and off the field, playing sports has allowed me to be a part of a team. Academically, there are many times when I consider myself to be a part of a team. Whether in group work, or in a class, I can contribute a lot of my academic success to being in a successful team and working hard.
Furthermore, my experiences with coworkers have taught me about responsibility. Working a part-time job has instilled a strong work ethic in me. I’ve learned the importance of being reliable and accountable, traits that have helped me become a more responsible student. These traits have contributed to academic success by allowing my teachers to recognize my responsibility. I’ve been an officer for many clubs and been able to be a trustworthy peer-leader. This has allowed me to excel in extracurriculars, allowing me to have a balanced education.
In conclusion, while formal education has undoubtedly played a crucial role in my academic success, the lessons I’ve learned outside the classroom have been equally important. The informal education I’ve received from my family, teammates, coaches, and coworkers has greatly influenced my academic success.
