Worrisome Life by Abril - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

When you were younger, did you ever think the worst things would happen to your family? That was the mindset I had when I was younger. I grew up in a low-income household, so this meant money was always tight. As a child, I had no concept of money but always knew that big numbers meant a lot of money. I remember the days when I would take a peek at the bills my parents would have to pay and worry if my parents would be able to afford them. Those same nights I would lie awake at night and cry my eyes out. I thought that our lives would go downhill from that point on.
Growing up, my dad worked in construction. Most of the time his job was to install drywall on the base layout of a house. This type of work is very dangerous in my opinion because sometimes one would have to install drywall on the ceiling. Over time, my dad experienced his arm being dislocated many times; he wouldn't go to the hospital because my family did not have health insurance and it would be very costly. As I grew older, my dad went through some expensive arm surgeries. Deep down, I always hated my father for working in such a dangerous job; I hated the fact that he would put himself in such a position over and over again. In my mind, I had to push these thoughts away because I knew it was hard for my dad to find work.
If I could give one piece of advice to my past self, I would tell her to not worry so much, because things are getting better. Since then we have had the chance to apply for healthcare, and recently my sister has been helping pay the bills. It's not much but it is a great start for what we have going on in the future.
