Future Psychology by Abigail - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

In ten years, I would like to see myself fulfilling my dream of working with children with special needs through equine therapy. I plan owning and operating a thriving equine therapy facility, where children can experience healing, growth, and joy through their interactions with horses. My journey to this dream begins with earning a degree in psychology, which will provide me with the essential knowledge and skills to understand the unique needs of the children I will serve. Through my education, hands-on experience, and unwavering passion, I will work diligently to create a space where children and families can find hope and support.

Pursuing a psychology degree is a crucial step in achieving my goal. This degree will equip me with an in-depth understanding of human behavior, cognitive development, and emotional well-being, particularly in children with special needs. Through my studies, I will gain insight into various conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and sensory processing disorders. Understanding these challenges will allow me to create personalized therapy plans that address each child's unique strengths and needs.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, my education will provide me with valuable hands-on experience through internships, research opportunities, and fieldwork. I plan to engage in programs that allow me to work directly with children, observe their behaviors, and develop strategies to support their growth. This experience will be invaluable when I eventually establish my equine therapy facility, as it will prepare me to handle real-life situations with confidence and empathy.

In addition to my psychology education, I will seek training and certifications in equine-assisted therapy. Horses have an incredible ability to connect with people, offering comfort, confidence, and healing. Studies have shown that equine therapy can improve social skills, reduce anxiety, and enhance motor coordination in children with special needs. By combining my psychology background with equine therapy expertise, I will create a holistic program that nurtures both the mind and body.

Starting and managing my equine therapy facility will also require business knowledge and leadership skills. To prepare for this, I will take courses in business management, nonprofit leadership, or entrepreneurship. Learning how to secure funding, manage operations, and lead a team will be essential to ensuring my facility’s long-term success. I will also seek mentorship from professionals who have experience in running therapy centers to gain practical insights and guidance.

While the journey to my ten-year vision will require dedication, patience, and perseverance, my passion for helping children with special needs will keep me motivated. I believe that every child deserves to be understood, valued, and given opportunities to thrive. My equine therapy facility will be a safe haven where children can build confidence, develop social skills, and experience joy in an environment tailored to their needs.

In conclusion, my education in psychology will serve as the foundation for my future career, equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to achieve my dream. By combining my academic background with equine therapy training and business knowledge, I will create a meaningful and impactful career dedicated to helping children with special needs. In ten years, I see myself living out this vision, making a difference in the lives of children and their families, and fulfilling my calling with love and purpose.
