The Opportunities of Education by Abigail - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

After I graduated high school, back in 2008, I did not go to college right away. After I graduated, I worked and quickly realized that if I wanted a better job, I would need some schooling. I summoned the courage and went over to a local community college and registered for some classes. Excited, I went home and told my dad I needed five hundred dollars for the semester. He told me that he did not have the money. I remember feeling disappointed and sad. I did not know too much about college or financial aid at that time.

About a year later I became pregnant and again, craved a higher education so that I could provide a more comfortable living for my son and myself. This time around, I registered at the same community college but became familiar with the financial aid office and made the most of it. I took classes as much as I could because I was also working and through hard work, I got accepted into nursing school. Unfortunately, due to some personal misfortunes, I left the nursing program and continued to focus on working.

Through the education I had received, I was able to land better opportunities where I could help others during their time of need. Currently, I am employed at a non-profit where we offer several services to our community. Some of those services include a shelter, counseling, advocacy, and more.

I am happily married and have two beautiful children, but one thing that I feel is missing for me is a college degree. I want to earn the satisfaction that I successfully completed a degree so that I may keep advancing in the work force and to also show my children that anything at any time is possible so long as you are determined and disciplined. I hope to obtain a bachelor's degree in psychology and after, go for a master's degree.
