Unwavering Perseverance: My Journey from Overlooked to State Finalist by Abigail - July 2024 Scholarship Essay

The most important lesson I've learned this year is the power of perseverance, self-belief, and courage. Throughout my track career, I faced numerous challenges, including being overlooked by coaches who focused on other athletes who were deemed more worthy. Despite being the fastest on the team, I was often told that I had time to improve and was even made a thrower by one coach who prioritized younger runners.
This year, everything changed when I got a new coach who recognized my potential, even when I doubted myself. With his guidance, I pushed through the obstacles and achieved personal records in the 100 and 200 meters. My relay team even made it to the state level and gained recognition throughout Florida.
Not only did I have perseverance, self-belief, and courage in athletics but I have incorporated those characteristics into my school work this past school year. My biggest year yet was last school year my junior year of high school in which I took on the most challenging courses than anyone else in my grade. I challenged myself to take 5 advanced placement classes as well as 2 dual enrollment classes. Many of my friends thought that I was crazy to put such a “burden” upon me saying that I would not have any time for myself. At times I wanted to give up but in fear of being looked at as a failure or even accept defeat I plowed on.
If I had given up when others doubted me, I wouldn't be where I am today. My journey has taught me that dedication and belief in oneself are crucial to overcoming adversity and achieving greatness. Moving forward, this experience will remind me to keep pushing, regardless of the challenges or setbacks I might face, and to always believe in my abilities. My story can inspire others who feel like they have failed, showing them that perseverance, dedication, and the courage to go on can lead to success.
