My Definition of Leadership by Abigail - May 2024 Scholarship Essay
According to the dictionary, leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. However, my definition of leadership involves not only actions but attitude. A good leader in my eyes is someone who motivates, inspires others, and leads by example. All illustrated by my very own mother.
It wasn’t until later in life that I realized all that my mother had sacrificed for our family. No matter the situation, she has always remained persistent. She has instilled the importance of resilience within me. By being such a vital member of our family, she has demonstrated successful leadership qualities by motivating her five children to succeed. My mother's selflessness is what influenced her children to have big dreams. My mother did not receive a college education and doesn’t have the opportunity to obtain a job like most other moms have. However, She truly never stops working and has never failed to provide less than her full effort to ensure her children will be successful.
Through my mother's selfless actions, she has sparked leadership qualities within her five children. She’s reflected true leadership by taking charge of the household and sacrificing her own time to tend to her children. Being raised by such a strong woman has implemented qualities that sparked the dedication that I put forth in everything that I do. The impact of my mother's leadership cannot be overstated. Having an immediate relationship with such a strong leader instilled diligence within me.
Perspectively, leadership is not about control, but rather guidance and inspiration. Leaders such as my mother who personify these qualities benefit society by sparking motivation in the upbringing of the next generation.
