I Have Power by Abigail - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

I Have Power

Most think knowledge is the key to life or that with knowledge comes power. Those phrases are true, but there is so much more behind “power”. What defines power? To some power could be job status or the number of people below you, but to others power could be the ability to do change, the ability to change someone’s life for the better, or even leading an exemplary life for younger children to follow. Education can shape your life in any way you allow it.

Without education we would not have knowledge and we would not have power. Education has been so much more than just going to school for me. I take my school life home with me every night. What I do with my education isn’t just limited to taking tests or getting good grades but it reaches as far as being involved with numerous clubs, committees, and sport programs.

Through my school I have become involved in the youth sports program in the community. I currently coach junior high volleyball and ref youth soccer. At the end of the day my goal is to leave a lasting impression on these children. To me, that is “power”, the ability to do change and lead a child on a good path! Without my education, and my school, I would not be given the opportunities to leave an impression on children’s lives. Without my education I wouldn’t get the satisfaction to see the smile on the little boys face when he scores a goal or the screams of excitement from the team when they win their game.

I have also been put in charge of a fundraising project for the junior class. Every weekend a group of my classmates get together to put on projects like bake sales, can drives, and benefit dinners. Spending my weekends with these people has influenced my life in a way I never could have imagined. Meeting them and getting to know them has opened so many doors in my life and expanded my views on a variety of things. I can’t even begin to thank them enough. Without education I would not have met half the people I know today. Without education I wouldn’t have the same views that I have now.

Education has truly shaped me as a person, without it I don’t know where I would be. It has made me happier by getting me involved with youth sports programs, meeting new people, and expanding my views on a variety of things. In my opinion I have all the “power” in the world and I have education to thank for that!
