The future is bilingual by Abigail - May 2020 Scholarship Essay
In fifty years, who knows how life will be but if i had to guess; the future is bilingual. Increasingly many families are bilingual coming from different backgrounds and stressing the importance of culture. It is no longer a cultural taboo to marry someone outside of your race or ethnic background. I have seen this with my own Irish and Italian grandparents, a marriage which at the time was shocking and considered unusual. As the world becomes more globalized we can expect to see languages taught in school as early as preschool. Immersive classes and study abroad will become the norm as we try to better understand each other better.
I suspect that most students will be multilingual by high school completion either from being taught at home or from extensive classroom learning. In the college setting there will be schools that mainly speak languages other than English, immersive schools you can attend to improve a certain language skill. As a bilingual culture grows, international education will too. Students from high school and beyond will be more likely to participate in exchange programs, or even take an internship in another country. This is a bright future filled with more opportunities than we could have imagined before. If you speak multiple languages, then you can relocate to a place where you have more job options or earn a higher salary.
The growth of language proficiency is something that will usher in a more globalized and culturally aware society. As we begin to understand different cultures and opinions, there will hopefully be less conflict as a result. The future of education is not just about how and what we are taught, it is about the world we create. This world will be a stronger and more united place as education grows, leaving a beautiful future to unfold
