Give Me a Cup of Coffee and I Can Do Anything by Abigail - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
Most people hate mornings and everything about them: waking up to the annoying alarm clock beeping in your ear, having to drag yourself out of your warm, comfortable bed, and getting up to prepare yourself for the day. It’s true: pulling yourself out of bed can sometimes seem like the most difficult task in the world, but after you overcome your body’s initial resistance to it, it isn’t all that bad. I, for one, look forward to getting up every day, slipping on my slippers, and heading downstairs to get my morning cup of coffee. I find that once I’m up and have rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, I am the most productive I can possibly be. This is why I am and always will be a proud morning person.
Mornings are the best time of day, in my opinion. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the excitement for the day ahead is prevalent. It also includes the best meal of the day: breakfast! Waffles, pancakes, and eggs, oh my! What’s a better start to your day than sitting down with your family to a nice breakfast meal? Not to mention the great cartoons that they play in the mornings. These are some of my favorite memories from when I was younger: sitting at the breakfast table with my sister with my toaster strudels while watching Spongebob. It’s the simple things, folks.
Not only are mornings in themselves amazing, they are also catalysts for productivity. At this time, I am awake, alive, and ready to take on the world. My mind is sharp and I actually want to do my homework. Not only am I motivated enough to do my homework, I also am able to accomplish other necessary tasks as well. One of the best feelings in the world is completing a goal and being able to check it off your to-do list. This is why mornings are my best friend in balancing my life with work, school, and everyday responsibilities.
On the opposite end, some may suggest that nights are more beneficial for productivity than mornings. However, I don’t believe that this is necessarily the case, at least not for me. From how I see it, by the end of the day, people are tired, unmotivated, and don’t want to do anything but lay on the couch. This is why you see so many people in the gym at 7 AM or a crowded coffee shop full of people working on their computers on a Sunday morning. They know that if they procrastinate and put off their responsibilities for later on in the day, they will end up never getting them done. Additionally, those who identify as night owls often get less sleep than those who identify as morning people. As we all know well, a good night’s sleep is essential for productivity and success. So, although it may seem like a good idea at the time, we should all avoid putting off our responsibilities, and rather try to accomplish them early in our days.
From my personal experience, mornings are much more advantageous to a person’s success than nights. Productivity in the morning does not only let you simply check things off your list, it also gives you a better and more optimistic outlook for the rest of your day. Not to mention that at night you will be able to simply relax knowing that all of your responsibilities are taken care of. Because of this, I’d choose mornings over nights any day.
