A Morning Person or a Night Owl? by Abigail - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Though it pains me to say that I am a morning person, it is true. I know that this might seem abnormal that I, a teenager, am a morning person but I am most productive during the early hours of the day. While I wish I could sleep in and work at night it’s simply not possible. The reason for this is because I have a go-getters attitude, like to be efficient, and absolutely hate being late to events.
Though I struggle to wake up most mornings, once I am up, I cannot go back to sleep. My mind is ready for a new day to begin and starts forming my to-do list for the day. For me, there is nothing quite like checking off an accomplished task to feel proficient. I love being productive and staying busy, and to do this I must be at the top of my game from the moment I’m up. It’s not that I don’t stay up late at night, it’s just that I get more done when it’s early.
At night I’m not as interested in being productive because it’s at the end of a long day and I just wish to relax. Being productive early helps me to accomplish more because I don’t push my tasks until it’s too late to finish them all and I don’t spend my day dreading what I have to do. I get them done so that I have more time later to do what I want, without worry. While I do enjoy having a fulfilling day, my morning personality was a learned trait.
I used to be a night owl and would push everything off until late, but once I hit high school I understood that the habit I had built would not work. I needed to stay on top of my work and improve my time management skills. With help from my dad, I was able to become a morning person. It drove me crazy getting up so early in the morning, but once I started to see the benefits of being productive in the morning I understood the importance of starting my day off right. If I start productive, I end the same way and am happy that I didn't waste my day away. Being a morning person is that the only way I can truly be productive.
