Being Forced to Teach by Abigail - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

I would hate being professor. I would get bored in a couple of days probably. However, if I had to teach a class, I would probably go for biology. I’ve always hated how it was taught, and I would love to change it. Plus, biology is a pretty broad topic, so I could do a lot with it.
While I love proving myself right to friends, I hate teaching. Being the center of attention has always killed me, so instead of teaching the normal way with me lecturing the class, I would instead find ways to have the class teach each other. Everyone has their own interests, even within a topic. I would use that to my advantage. Instead of telling the class about something, I would have them tell me what they know or have heard, and I would be able to give them what they need to fill in the blanks. I would probably feel more comfortable, and the students would hopefully feel more relaxed and willing to ask questions. Then, if there’s a question I don’t know the answer to, the students would be allowed to bring in doctor journals, videos, anything really, to inform everyone about the topic and prove me wrong. I know for a fact that it gives people a confidence boost to be right about something. On top of that, they would be able to educate themselves while researching what they need. This tends to help people remember things better. Actually going through the work and telling other people about it is proven to be a good way to improve memory.
Along with this comes the fact that biology is a lot of material about multiple different things, so everyone would probably have an interest in something in the class. This means that people will get excited, and different people will be finding information and doing research for different topics. For example, one student might do research on evolution and another later on might look up information on different types of cells. This would allow for everyone to speak up and hopefully make it so that everyone gets better grades.
Obviously, there are plenty of improvements and adjustments to be made for this situation, but it’s a good start. Biology has always been a love of mine; I’ve just never loved how people teach it. Changing it would make more interesting for both me and the students, and nobody would ever get bored since biology is such a huge topic. I know I wouldn’t get bored, so if I was forced to be a professor, I would become a biology professor.
