"Alone, Yet Not Alone" by Abby - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
My favorite book I have ever read for school purposes was a book I read in grade school titled “Alone, Yet Not Alone”. The book follows the story of a young girl whose parents have recently immigrated with their family to America from Germany. The year is 1755 when Barbara and her younger sister, Regina, are captured by Indians and taken into captivity, deep into hostile country. The story is about how Barbara struggles to return to her family, find her sister Regina, who was taken to a different tribe then her, and yet still maintain her faith in God. I was drawn to this book, not because it was romantic, daring, and adventurous, but because it was how a simple, everyday girl stayed true to her beliefs and standards even though she was placed in a completely hostile environment that contradicted every belief she stood for. She faced death many times, once almost being burned at the stake for attempting to escape. Not only did she remain faithful, but she was hopeful as well. She never gave up hope that one day she would see her family again. Even when she received an offer of marriage from the chief’s son which would have given her high ranking in the tribe, she never ceased to look for opportunities to escape.
“Alone, Yet Not Alone” is a wonderful book exemplifying core American beliefs and standards. Yet, it is not a boring book in the least. Even though there is much you can learn from the book, it keeps you interested with its many exciting twists and turns. I would highly recommend this book to any and every one.
