Learning Beyond the Classroom: A Hands-On Journey into Aesthetics" by Aaron - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

One of my favorite non-traditional ways to learn is by immersing myself in hands-on experiences, especially in fields that I am passionate about. While structured lessons and formal education provide a solid foundation, real-world learning pushes me to apply what I’ve learned, adapt quickly, and find creative solutions to challenges as they arise. This approach allows me to explore beyond the limits of the classroom and engage with knowledge in a way that feels both personal and impactful.

Currently, I am applying this non-traditional learning method in the field of aesthetics and skincare. Having faced my own struggles with poor skin in the past, I’ve developed a deep interest in understanding how different treatments, routines, and products can help transform not only skin health but also the way people feel about themselves. Outside of my nursing studies, I have spent countless hours researching the science behind skincare and beauty treatments through online courses, podcasts, and tutorials. I often follow dermatologists and skincare professionals on social media platforms, which allows me to access expert advice that complements what I learn in school.

One of the most valuable aspects of this non-traditional learning journey is experimentation. I frequently try new skincare products and techniques to see how my own skin responds. This hands-on approach gives me a deeper understanding of how different ingredients and routines affect skin health. It’s not just about following a set formula; it’s about learning from trial and error and tailoring what I’ve learned to individual needs, something I hope to one day bring to my clients in a professional setting.

Additionally, I’ve become part of online communities of skincare enthusiasts, where we exchange tips, product recommendations, and experiences. Engaging in these discussions has expanded my understanding of skincare beyond what I could have learned from textbooks alone. I’ve learned about emerging trends and products from people who are equally passionate about aesthetics and beauty, and this communal learning has been both enriching and motivational.

In conclusion, my favorite non-traditional way to learn is by fully immersing myself in the subject matter and gaining knowledge through practical experiences. This method not only helps me retain information better but also allows me to develop the confidence and skills I need to succeed in the field of aesthetics. By taking control of my learning outside of the classroom, I’m not only gaining knowledge but also the tools to make a difference in the lives of others, helping them feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.
