Importance of Hard Work by Aaron - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school career, the importance of putting in time and effort when given a task has always been a top priority. The combination of countless honors classes, and years of track for school influenced me to have a great work ethic and this is a quality that has always been essential for me to succeed. Learning to grow as a student and athlete, I believe I was given many opportunities to help push both my classmates and teammates to work hard.

Over the years I’ve learned that a lack of commitment and dedication to school can be extremely detrimental when it comes to taking an honors class, and more recently for me, AP courses. As each year gets more and more difficult, many students have to adjust the ways in which they approach every subject. This has always been the case for me, and I had to learn to develop new ways to excel every time certain strategies or ideas didn’t work. Adapting to a course and getting a better understanding of how to handle it is something that I’ve always been able to help others with. I understand the stress that comes with being an athlete, having a job, trying to spend time with friends, etc., while having to do a significant amount of work. This pushes me to work hard, but also pushes me to help others to do the same because it creates a great working environment for everyone. In essence, I enjoy knowing how my peers or friends may feel about specific classes because that can influence me to lift them up and them to do the same for me so we can all do well.

This type of relationship I build with my classmates is the same I like to create with my teammates on track. I strongly believe that similar to academics, it’s very important to have a great work ethic when it comes to sports, and this is the attitude that I always have on the team. As I stated with my classes, influencing others to work hard helps me to do the same, and this can also be said about track. Every year I’ve consistently improved by putting in hours of practice and by bringing energy onto the track. Although the workouts and practices are extremely draining at times, my goal is always to create a fun environment for others. At the end of the day, if none of us have fun putting in the work, no one would ever improve, so I firmly think that that aspect of the sport is the most crucial. While I’ve helped many of my teammates get in better shape, compete in meets, and build a love for track, I’ve also built numerous friendships as well. All in all, being part of the team taught me how to motivate others to work hard and influence others to enjoy it.
